I found this to be quite interesting. Universal design approaches learning from the mentality that everyone should have equal access to learning. Students should not just have access to the information but also be able to control the methods of accessing information. The instructor is all the while able to monitor different learning processes and is able to initiate a more effective method if needed.
My classroom would benefit greatly from using this design. I believe I use many facets of this design but would indeed benefit even to a greater extent if I were to follow this design more closely. I would be able to more effectively reflect on the way in which my students process information and possible improve the outcome for diverse learners.
The instructors are still responsible to facilitate learning but this design is meant to remove barriers students may have when accessing information. Please see links below:
This design is beneficial to students of all ethnicity, background, upbringing, age, style and disability as well as diversity. This course offers different means of representation. This approach assists the student to learn using their own preferred means. One example would be to place notes or text on Angel allowing the student access to the information. This course in additions offers different forms of engagement. By using flexible teaching strategies, students are able to determine and use methods that are best for their own skill level. Expression is also offered in this design. A student would be allowed to write a paper or do an oral presentation, taking a test and taking into consideration that disability services are available. There are many means of implementation used in this design as well. Putting the course on line allows the student to access material that may have been overlooked in lecture. This design also uses peer mentoring and discussion groups, guided notes, comprehensive syllabus, instructional methods, handouts, auditory and visual aids.
In summary this program is designed to use flexible means of presentation, expression and engagement. Think of architecture who designs to meet the needs of those who have disabilities or need some sort of accommodation. The architect will draw up plans to accommodate wheelchairs or other assistive devices that may be needed. Using this design, educators will design a course/curriculum including goals, methods, material and assessment tools that will accommodate a variety of learners which in turn will reduce barriers to the learner and create success for us all.
